UBS was hired to upgrade an existing power plant in Manila, Philippines. UBS performed frame analysis for the re-design of the boiler support main frame structural support of the Foster Wheeler boiler for the Calaca 1,300 MW wall fired pulverized coal/solid fuel unit. This specialized Structure was original designed and erected and came in operation in 1982-83. The original calculations were based on two dimensional computer modelling and closed for “hand” calculations. In 2017, design changes were made to the Economizer, Primary Super-heater and Division Walls. At the end of 2018 additional design changes will be made to the Furnace and Boiler, lengthening the bottom of Furnace by 8.5 feet. .As part of this change and to support the Life extension of the furnace and Boiler. The structure was redesigned for the following purposes:
- Additional or revised modifications for the longer lower Furnace
- Compliance with current code – Philippine national coach
- Addition load due to longer Furnace and other changes
- Analysis using current state of the art 3d modelling with STAADPro.
In summary , the purpose of our analysis was to upgrade the main power plant structure in accordance with current Philippines building code with the code required design loading for wind and seismic including additional loading imposed by extension of furnace and new additional platforms.
